A few years back you knew where you were when it came to discussing
roleplaying with non-roleplayers. They'd ask what your hobby was, you'd reply
"roleplaying", and they'd reply with a look of blank incomprehension.
But now everything's changed. Instead of that uncomprehending blankness
and a quick change of conversation you're likely to get a reply along the lines
of: "Oh yeah, I'm into that too! Have you got 'Dark Swords V'? You need a
Pentium II and 64 meg of RAM..."
No, no, no, no, NO, GODDAMNIT!
Don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with computer adventure strategy
games (for want of a better term I'll call them that). I'm sure they're an
absolutely fascinating pastime, albeit one that doesn't particularly grab me. (I'm
more of a Wolfenstein/Doom/Quake first-person mindlessly blow the fuckers
away man myself).
But it's not roleplaying, and I have this to say to practitioners of the pastime of
computer adventure strategy games:
We were here first. We thought of the term "roleplaying" to describe our
hobby. You have a different hobby. So...
Bog off and find your own name!
