The most important fact about character motivations is that many characters don't have them. Let me explain.

Some players play each character as a separate person, with his or her own personality and own motivations. But many other players just play their character as an extension of themselves.

In that case, the character's motivations are identical to the player's motivations (which I'll discuss later on).

So this section only applies to those players who create a character with its own motivations.

What Does This Mean?

Players who create "characters" are actually less of a problem to handle from a motivation point of view, as long as you get the right motivation before the campaign starts.

It is very simple, so simple in fact that I can't think of anything interesting to say, so I'll just point out the sodding obvious and move onto the next section.

Work out what motivations are required for your plot, and tell the players to create character's with those motivations.

If your campaign needs five good guys who - if they witness any wrongs - will wade straight into sort them, then make sure that the players create good guys.
