...If It Wasn't For You Pesky Kids...
Of course, a shambolic ending can be caused by troublesome PCs. You know
the sort. They thing they're some sort of big-shots, just because they killed a
couple of big snakes. Oh, and one of them has the 'Magic Earring of +1
hearing', or something like that. So, rather than leave the castle, and return the
mysterious book to its rightful mysterious owner, they'd prefer to keep it. After
all, "that old git who sent us here probably hasn't got anything useful to reward
us with anyway."
They then wander off, into uncharted (and
unwritten-down-in-the-GMs-notepad) territory. Of course, the GM didn't write
anything down about the book either. I mean, it was all straight-forward. The
PCs recover the book, return it to the wizard, and gain a few XPs and some
money. What the book actually did was unimportant.
Clever (cruel and devious) GMs would curse the book. A few warts and boils
each should do it. Or it could turn out to be a useless cook-book, full of
vegetarian dishes. Either way this isn't what the GM expected, and as such
means you get more of a '..to be continued', than a '...happily ever after'
ending.
